Dr. Doane, a refractive and cataract surgeon who has practiced in Kansas City since 1996, has been involved with the Light Adjustable Lens since 2008, including participation in all of its FDA clinical studies, and has implanted it commercially since 2021.

"I personally surpassed the three thousandth eye implanted with the Light Adjustable Lens," said Dr. Doane. "This is a testament to what works and what makes patients the happiest."

Unlike traditional premium lenses, which are fixed at the time of implantation, the Light Adjustable Lens can be fine-tuned after surgery using targeted UV light, allowing surgeons to customize each patient's vision based on how their eye actually heals. Dr. Doane said that adaptability has given the lens unusual staying power in a field where technology turns over quickly.

"New multifocal technology comes out about every twelve to eighteen months," he said. "If a surgeon was using lens A in January of 2024, most likely he is not using that lens any longer. With the Light Adjustable Lens, we're still using effectively the same base lens we started with five or six years ago."

Dr. Doane also pointed to a broader shift in what cataract surgery is meant to achieve. "The evolution of cataract surgery has come from just getting rid of the cataract and putting a lens in, to getting rid of the cataract but giving people functional vision," he said. "And that functional vision now is not just distance, it's distance, intermediate, and near."

Susan Mosier, M.D., who performs adjustments for LAL patients with Dr. Doane at Discover Vision Centers, speaks on her personal experience with the lens during cataract surgery: “When I was told I had cataracts, that was just a few months into working here at Discover. I had not qualified for LASIK. So, I was really excited about LAL. It gives LASIK-like results with the cataract surgery.”
 
The biggest benefit that stands out for Dr. Mosier is the visual freedom that the Light Adjustable Lens has given her. “My favorite part about having these lenses myself is that I am free of glasses. I have had glasses since the 4th grade, so it’s very nice to be able to see distance and near without glasses.”

As Dr. Doane put it, no lens delivers perfection for every patient, but the goal is to get as close as possible. "There's nothing that's one hundred percent perfect," he said. "So we want the technology that does the absolute best, knowing we're going to strive for each patient to achieve that level of perfection."
